Can I try a class before I commit?

First Class

What to expect during your first class.

Please wear something appropriate to kick and workout in - such as sweats. We workout barefoot for safety.

Please arrive 5-10 minutes early.

Children will need a legal guardian present to sign the participation info. Guardians must stay for the duration of the child's first class.

You will receive a welcome packet with schedule and membership info, and the beginner curriculum when you arrive.

Audience members are asked to respect the learning environment by observing quietly. Please keep younger children seated with you, or coloring at the table, or reading. Electronic devices should be silenced.

Class starts and ends with a bow in to show respect and remind students to practice our core values and strive to make good behavior stronger.

Our core tenets of Taekwondo are Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit.

Our class starts with a warm-up to safely prepare student's bodies for today's lesson. Students who arrive after the warm-up will not be admitted to class as it would be unsafe for them to jump into exercises their bodies were not prepared for.

Students should ask to permission to leave the training floor only if they need to use the restroom or are ill.

We do take scheduled water breaks. If you forget your water bottle - we do have water available to purchase.

Class will last 45 minutes.

After class is when it is appropriate to ask any questions about the class, workout recovery care, and continuing training.
You will not be asked to sign-up for a membership or pay any money during your first class. We prefer families have a chance to discuss their experience, schedules, and level of interest before they commit to training.

How Many Classes

How many classes can, or should I take per week?

Your tuition will include one class per day we’re open. We’ve found that training once per week just isn’t enough for effective learning of skills, retaining of information, or building the muscle memory so necessary for effective self-defense. Our teaching cycle is designed so that a person training twice a week will be able to achieve all their belt level goals and promote to the next belt level every ten weeks. These classes are best supplemented with 15-30 minutes of daily at home practice. Like anything else worth being good at—the more often you practice the better you become. Training more than twice a week will not get you to black belt faster, it will just assure that you’re awesome when you do reach your goals.

Most of our beginner an intermediate students take 3 or more classes a week. Our advanced students like increase the intensity of their workout and efficiency of their commute by doubling up on classes. So they usually take about 6 classes a week at no additional tuition cost.

Discounts

Bulk Lesson Discounts

We prefer teaching students to become confident, capable, and successful individuals to accounting or paperwork. This is why we offer bulk discounts on tuition when you sign-up for longer periods of time.

Family Discounts

At Reeves Martial Arts & Fitness we are proud to be a fun, family activity that transcends generations. We enjoy the many benefits families find from training together. Families that are learning together will find that one person will remember half a move and the other person the other half. When students get home they have a built in practice buddy that will enhance their retention of new material and help improve their shills. Families that train together are also more likely to achieve their fitness and martial arts goals, be those goals weight loss or black belt. Our families have a fun, neutral family activity where parents don’t have to be in charge for forty-five minutes and kids are learning and sweating right alongside their parents. We’ve even had families train with us through the dreaded teenage years and tell us that TaeKwonDo is the one activity everyone unanimously looks forward to every week.

For these reasons we offer steep family discounts on tuition in order to make training together as a family an affordable family experience. The first family member in a household is at full price tuition. Each additional household family member can receive all the same great benefits of training for 50% off their monthly tuition.

Testings

Belt Promotions

Belt Levels are a crucial key to how TaeKwonDo achieves such wonderful results with it’s students. At 2-1/2+ years, black belt is an enormous goal for adults, let alone children. We teach you to conquer big goals by breaking them up into medium and smaller goals. Small goals like curriculum stripes can be earned every few weeks and they add up to medium goals. Our medium goals, color belts, can be achieved every 10 weeks. All your color belts add up to become the knowledge you need to not only become well versed and successful as a black belt, but in life as well.

Our testing are held in public so students learn how to speak and perform well in front of people and under the pressure of nerves just as they would at college exams, job interviews, and in the stressful situation of actually needing their self-defense. We assure you thousands of students before you have survived these friendly public performances and you will too - and come out stronger each time. Color Belt testings are held every 10 weeks and students who have achieved their curriculum stripes and class hours are eligible to test. The testing fee is $25 for each Little Ninja and TaeKwonDo color belt tester. The testing fee include the test, testing materials, the students new belt, and rank certificate. Most taekwondo schools test every 2 months, and have testing starting at $75. and going up fees for every belt level. When previewing schools ask what their testing schedule and fees are so you can budget appropriately. Should students persevere the 2-1/2+ years it takes to achieve the first level of black belt - black belt testing fees are $300 and do not go up with each rank. Black belts then become eligible to attend more classes and receive leadership and teaching training at no additional expense.

Not every students tests at every available test. In fact very few do. It is essential for the physical and mental growth of each student that their bodies and minds are properly prepared for the next levels challenges. As students start training with different needs and challenges their goals and timeline to achieve them will naturally adjust as necessary. And sometimes life just gets busy and you skip a testing and are able to show up strong at the next one. We have a saying in martial arts, "The journey is the reward."

Expenses

Additional Expenses

Many students find it helpful to have a back up uniform and taekwondo school t-shirt to train in. You can find a link to our available t-shirts in the shop page and order uniforms at the school.

A gear bag is essential for keeping your uniform, belt, book, and gear in one easy to go place. Many martial artist's gear bag just lives in their trunk. You can order a taekwondo gear bag through us or use any old thing lounging in your closet.

At 6ish months, students will need personal sparring gear for safety. Please purchase these new from us to ensure you don't pick up a fungus from used gear. We also have specific gear specs to keep students safe and its hard to tell what will do online. It runs between $100-$150 a set.

A pool noodle, sawed in half, is really the best training tool you could have for practicing your blocks, kicks, and strikes on.

We can order you more dedicated martial arts targets if you'd like. We can also order you martial arts safe training mats if you'd like to convert space in your home or garage to train. Don't buy a new heavy bag, or free standing heavy bag. If you would really like one - purchase it on the used market, sometimes they're free.

Taekwondo Tournaments

Just as belt testings are an extension of your learning and training - so too are tournament competitions. Tournaments provide our students with many benefits. They give our students the opportunity to observe, interact, and get feedback from martial artists outside our school. The competitors become great friends and training partners. Students in our school become siblings. Tournament and seminar participants become cousins who are greeted with hugs and gossip to catch up. Tournaments also give students goals an important deadline to strive towards. When we get back from a tournament the first thing we ask our students is not did you win, but what did you learn? They should have been stealing inspiration from the other students. The judges are all black belt leaders in their schools who volunteer their time because they know they themselves benefited so much from competing and they want to share that experience with the next generation. The judges will help guide students through the competition and offer helpful tips on how to improve. We currently participate in four tournaments per year. Prices vary between $60-$100 depending on who hosts. We require our students to compete in at least one tournament before black belt. Most of our students keep going back because they're fun and inspiring.
